Lingusitic Pet Peeve: Altar and Alter

Altar (noun) – an elevated place or structure, as a mound or platform, at which religious rites are performed or on which sacrifices are offered to gods, ancestors, etc.

To Alter (verb) – to make different in some particular, as size, style, course, or the like; modify: to alter a coat; to alter a will; to alter course.

These three photos are of altars.
I have not altered any of these photos of altars.
