Is chocolate really that surprising in chili?

Because I’m doing my usual perusal of Tastespotting and everyone’s all, “Put chocolate in your chili! It’s surprising!” and I’m all, “Um, I’ve been doing that for well over a decade, why is that surprising?”

Mary Sue’s Chili Recipe
1 lb ground beef or bison
1 yellow onion, diced
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 can crushed tomatoes
1 can kidney beans, drained and rinsed
2T chili powder
2oz dark chocolate, chopped
1 squirt sriracha (optional)
water to cover

Brown the meat, add the onions and garlic and cook until it smells good. Add the rest of the ingredients, simmer for a couple hours, stirring infrequently. Nom with your choice of accessories, I like potatoes.
